Every now and then I like to take a break from talking about newborn photography stuff and just post some regular tidbits from my life, so today I thought I’d offer up my personal review of Stitch Fix. Stitch Fix is, according to their website, “the affordable and accessible personal styling service” that sends five items to your doorstep for $20. You can use this $20 to purchase item(s) from your box. If you purchase all 5 items in the box you receive a 25% discount off your total bill. Any items you don’t purchase can be sent back to Stitch Fix completely free in a prepaid envelope. So basically if you hate everything in the box and return all items you are only out the $20 styling fee. If you love everything you are out whatever the cost of the items is, minus your existing $20 investment. I heard buzz about this company for years now, but given that since 2011 I’ve been at home I did not really think it was something that I could justify spending money on. However, the buzz has grown stronger and louder over the past few months, and I recently got involved with a Facebook thread in my Moms League group where a bunch of Stitch Fix users were talking about their experiences. I decided to take the plunge and go ahead and schedule a Stitch Fix box. It was super easy to set up my Stitch Fix account—they asked a bunch of questions about my personal style, my existing wardrobe, my measurements and I was even able to link my Pinterest clothing inspiration board so the e-stylist could access it. My first box arrived last weekend and I was pleasantly surprised by how spot-on the stylist got it on her first time at bat for me. I receive three tops, one pair of denim shorts and a dress. Everything fit pretty well—the only exception being the shorts. Those were a bit snug, but I also just returned from vacation so perhaps after eating like a normal person again for a week or two that should be a better fit. All things considered, I’d say getting items that fit that well just based on some questions and measurements was pretty fantastic. The clothing did a good job matching my tastes. I will say most items were things I would never have picked for myself in a store, but upon seeing these garments and trying them on my mind was changed. I think that was a major benefit to doing this service—the opportunity to step out of my usual comfort zone, have access to more boutique styles and have someone else take my existing preferences and find things that pushed the envelope a bit to help me develop a more consistent “me” style. The three tops were all in my “like” category—I’d give them a solid 7 out of 10. The shorts, like I said, were cool in theory but in reality the fit just wasn’t up to par. And the dress was like OMG I love you level. Of course, I have a weakness for buying dresses and I already have too many of them that I don’t wear often enough, so I’m not sure this was a good thing. In my opinion it only makes sense to buy everything in the box so you get the 25% discount, and if you don’t want to buy it all then just stick to buying 1 item so you can redeem your $20 investment. In the end I decided to keep the dress and return the other items. I wanted to keep it all, but the shorts didn’t fit properly and if I needed to return them it just made sense to keep either 1 item or ALL items so I could get the 25% off discount. I was able to leave feedback for the stylist so she knows in the future that I am likely only going to buy 1 piece per box unless she knocks it out of the park and gets all 5 items to be “loved”.
Even though I ended up returning 4 out of the 5 items, I went ahead and signed up for another box to arrive in July. I love that the stylist did such a good job the first time around and I am eager to see if with my feedback she can really knock it out of the park. Plus, this was a fantastic way to update my wardrobe without having to schlepp my preschooler to 5,000 boutiques—because nothing says fun to me like dusting a dressing room with Goldfish cracker crumbs. I’m really excited to skip that step and still have the opportunity to feel and look like a real girly human again. I’ll totally keep you posted on the next box, and if you feel inclined to try out Stitch Fix yourself, please use my referral code!
