I gave fair warning that I was going to make about a million posts for my own little guy’s first birthday!
As a DFW baby photographer, I’ve had the immense joy of photographing many cake smashes. I’ve seen it all, and there are definitely a few things I’ve learned. For starters, NEVER give a baby red velvet cake unless you’re going for a “Walking Dead” theme. Next, keep expectations low because most babies do not like the texture or taste of cake.
If you follow me on Pinterest, you probably noticed that I went a little crazy deciding on a cake smash theme. There ideas out there are vast, and amazing!! I love being a boy mom, but I will confess that I felt a little grief over not being able to put together a beautiful, floral and greenery themed cake smash. Someone, please bring me a girl baby soon.
Anyway, despite all the awesome stuff floating around, I eventually settled on a rainbow banner that read “Happy Birthday” and a simple white cake from the local grocer. I figured this had the best chance of looking classic over time. Plus, the neutral backdrop goes with Judd’s sitter and newborn session. Also, I love that the simplicity of the setting really showcases Judd’s personality.
I knew that Judd would probably detest the cake, and expected to do what I have to do for 90 percent of babies, which is to force them to jab their hand in the cake. Well, I would like to report that the cake smash was a smashing success!! Baby J attacked that first birthday cake like no other. He tried to shovel so much cake in his mouth that he choked on it and I had to dig out the slimy mess (tmi??).
The full cake smash gallery is on my portfolio page if you have any interest.
