I got to celebrate Baby E’s first birthday yesterday with a cake smash! Mr. E has been walking since 9 months, so he was basically running during his 1st birthday cake smash. I was telling Momma how all my cake smash babies the past few months have been 1 year old walkers–what is it with these spring and summer babies being little tots already?
One of my favorite aspects of being a photographer is getting to document how quickly babies grow up. I am so honored to photograph newborns, and it is a great joy when parents invite me back to take photos of the growing stages in their child’s life.
I recently announced my summer studio cake smash special for babies turning 1 in the months of June, July and August, and as I prepared to post that blog I was going through some old files looking for cake smash images. It was super fun looking back through the last 12 months and seeing all the babies that I photographed at birth or shortly thereafter and the seeing the additional images of these little ones growing up to their first birthdays! Baby L celebrated his first birthday earlier this week, and I had the chance to meet with him just a day after his actual birthday for his very last Baby Steps session. I first met this great family for their parents maternity session over a year ago! So, I’ve basically known them since before they were born–hehe.
It has been an immense joy to photograph these little girls as they have grown over the past year. It is really one of my absolute favorite things about this job–getting to see those teeny, tiny babies change so quickly throughout the course of a year. The growth is so dramatic when I see them every 3-4 months…and by one year old little ones are starting to develop their own personality. Taking photos of twins can be challenging–one is happy and the other isn’t; someone wants nothing to do with the camera and the other is a giant ham that day. But, these young ones have been in pretty good spirits every time we’ve met. They even survived a very country photoshoot featuring lots of insects and sticker bushes at their 9 month session. They are troopers!
We held their 1st birthday/cake smash session at my in-home studio in Roanoke, TX. Mom brought some great looking cakes, they were so pretty it was almost a shame to have them smashed! The girls were into the cake, especially the frosting part. Mom brought inspiration for this setup, so big props to their amazing mama for setting up such a special cake smash.

Miss N and her family met up with me this past weekend for some first birthday/family photos. They picked a great day–one of the first ‘starting to feel like fall’ mornings we’ve had!
Miss N was really great considering she had a full hour of photos. Most babies her age would have at least one meltdown, but she just kept going through the whole thing. We even coaxed a few smiles out of this very serious little girl.
Mom brought along some great props, including a photo of Miss N as a newborn. The idea is for Miss N to take a photo each year that shows her holding an image from her last birthday–such a sweet sentiment.

Miss E is my latest baby steps graduate!! Her mom had the cutest little setup for her 1st birthday/cake smash photos this past weekend. Who can resist a pretty little girl with all that pink? LOVE it!
At her last session, this little girl wanted absolutely nothing to do with me, but since there was some cake involved this time around she got used to the idea of having her photos taken. She was really digging that cake, enjoying a yummy breakfast of frosting. Cake smashes are one of my favorite things to do because babies are typically just so awe-stuck, confused and excited all at the same time–you get so many cute faces and silly grins.

Happy 1st Birthday to Miss R! She started her session off pretty happy, but as our tour through the Dallas Arboretum continued it became clear that Miss R was about ready to be done with me and my camera. Thankfully her Mommy and Grandma were there to help elicit some beautiful grins and smiles! You have to love the extremes shown here–just a perfect documentation of what it’s like to be 1.

Baby B is celebrating his 1st birthday and visited me at my residential studio in Roanoke, TX for his cake smash earlier this week.
Baby B was all about this cake. I mean, the kiddo put his little foot right through the top. Love!
Of course, Mom did have to help him a little to get to the actual cake part so he wouldn’t just be eating the icing. But still, he did a fabulous job showing that cake who was boss.
