I was so excited to have Baby H in for her newborn photo session yesterday at my residential studio in Roanoke/N. Fort Worth. I first met her family back in August for a maternity session, and I always happily anticipate meeting these little babes.

Something must be in the water because the last month has been a boy-fest, and I was eager to bring out all my girly goodies to use for this babe. Mom requested a palette of pink, creams and grays, and I don’t think it’s any secret around here that I am a lover of soft, neutral colors in newborn photography so this was right up my alley.

Miss H rocked her session. She was a sleepy baby and loved being on her tummy with her legs all curled up. In fact, when I attempted the side pose (the easiest pose of all time and the one that 99% of babies prefer) she actually lost it and that’s when I had to call her mommy in for some milk. Miss H just wanted to be a squish which made for some terrific setups, and I’m not complaining!

Baby H has a 5 year old big sister who joined in for a few sibling pictures toward the end of our session. It was a treat working with such a big kid who followed directions and made it so easy and fun to capture those important sibling shots.

Ft Worth Newborn Photographer l Sophie’s Cake Smash

One of my greatest joys as a Ft Worth newborn photographer is following little babes through their first year of life, all the way to that important BIG ONE. That’s why when Miss S visited my residential studio in Roanoke, TX yesterday morning for her 1st birthday cake smash, I was beyond thrilled. I first met Miss S when she was in her mommy’s tummy, so it was a total joy to be a part of documenting her first birthday as well. This little girl was ready for her cake!! I love it when babies are enthusiastic about their cake smashes–so many babies just stare at the cake and usually we end up having to force the issue a bit by helping them dig in. However, this little miss was chomping at the bit as Mom put that cake in front of her, and I had to be quick with the shutter to capture those first seconds. Plus, Miss S and Mom had a little exercise for the day in wrangling that cake covered silly girl.

I also love the color’s for Miss Sophie’s cake smash session. There is something really playful about purple and teal that is just perfect for a little girl. The owl theme was also a ‘hoot’.

Ft. Worth Newborn Photographer l StichFix Box #3 Review

My 3rd Stitchfix box arrived last week, just in time for my birthday! I purposely scheduled it to arrive the week of my birthday as a little gift to myself. What was super cool is that my in-laws got me a StitchFix gift card the same day so that gave me a little extra freedom to keep some of the pieces that I wasn’t sure if I could justify affording. Real quick, if you haven’t heard of StitchFix yet, here’s the deal: This is an online styling service where you fill out a profile, pay a $20 styling fee and then receive five pieces of apparel in the mail. You are encouraged to keep a Pinterest board with StitchFix inspiration for your stylist and to provide lots of feedback and notes for your stylist. The $20 styling fee is automatically applied to anything you purchase from your box. If you decide to purchase all five items then you get a 25% discount off every item. You have three business days to try on your clothes and then you return anything you don’t want to buy in a pre-paid envelope and send it right on back where it came from. I just started a StitchFix account over the summer after hearing positive reviews from friends. You can check out how I felt about Box #1 and Box #2. I love the surprise factor of having a stylist pick things out for me that I could never have imagined on my own. Plus, I just don’t have the time or desire to tote my tot around while I go in different clothing stores and try stuff on. So this is a great option for me to keep my closet current and look like a real human. This month I requested fall transition pieces and jeans. I figured I already had the seamless paper down so it was a perfect time to try things on. Plus, my boy was in school. Having a fashion show and taking your picture sounds like fun—right?? Yeah, no. O.M.G. I pinned like 200 navy blazers on my StitchFix inspiration board, so I was super hyped to see that in my fix this month. I tried it on with a plain T-shirt and really like it. I feel like I’m channeling some J. Crew with this blazer, and I love the preppy vibe it gives off. I tend to gravitate more toward the closer, form fitting clothes as opposed to the bohemian, wide and boxy stuff that seems be really popular these days. I feel like the blazer was flattering, I liked the color, and it was a super soft jersey material. Plus, I like that I can wear it over a T-shirt, giving me the versatility in early fall to take the jacket off if I get too hot and still have an acceptable ensemble on. Another piece that I’d requested was a flannel or plaid button down. While this isn’t a button down, I like the spirit of the plaid and I love the rich colors. It was a medium weight and super comfortable. I love the detailing around the neckline. The photos didn’t feel as flattering to me as I felt like it looked in person. I can see this being a staple that I wear all the time in the fall. Verdit: Kept Mavi Katy Bootcut Jeans Well….hate to give away the surprise but I don’t have these on my possession anymore. The fit wasn’t quite right and I actually sold them to someone on the StitchFix buy/sale/trade Facebook group. I mailed them off before I had a chance to take a picture of myself. These jeans feel like butter. They are ridiculously soft, and I love the lighter wash. I already own one pair of skinny jeans in a dark wash, and I wore them almost every day last winter. In fact, I ended up getting a hole in the knee of my last skinnies because I wore them so often and bought the exact same pair on clearance last spring before they went bye-bye for the season. Adding these jeans to my lineup means I have some other denim options. I’m not sure my body type is actually flattered by skinnies, but they are so useful to wear with boots and stuff that I just rock them anyway. Verdict: Kept Staccato Kareen Open Cardigan

So cozy!!!

Super soft, super comfy and it has so much material I could probably fit my dogs inside with me to keep warm. I like the stripes and how it can layer over a plain T-shirt or long sleeves. It is long enough to go with leggings and hide my booty, so I consider that a major plus. I can see wearing this around my house as lounge-wear, which is positive because it means I can look “put-together” on a regular day. Verdit: Kept So, there you have it—I kept 4/5 and I feel like I’ve got a good start on my fall wardrobe. I actually got the 25% discount because I sold that pair of bootcut jeans and thus technically purchased all 5 items through Stitch Fix. So I was able to pass the savings on those jeans along to the person who bought them from me, with the added bonus of getting a pretty good discount on the items I did keep. Plus, I had the gift card from my in-laws so I think I got away paying nothing out of pocket for this fix. Roanoke Child Photographer l Holden Back to School

So my little dude went back to school this morning! He has two more years before kindergarten, so no tears for either of us. He has actually been begging me to send him back to school for the past several weeks. We had an awesome summer full of vacation, swimming, time with friends and special outings…but I guess he is tired of being stuck at home all day with mommy and wants to play with his pals again.

It seems like Holden’s school started a bit late this year, as my Facebook has been crowded recently with the littles of my friends as they head back to school. I know as parents that is one thing we are required to capture each year and if it goes anything like in my house the final product is totally deceiving. The little guy pictured above may look angelic, but I promise there was a lot of chocolate chip bribery and other crazy antics to get this one photo. One photo–out of probably 100 that I actually snapped. Enjoy a few of my outtakes and know that you aren’t alone!

My job is exciting! I click a button on my camera and then poof the magic happens and everything is done—NOT!!

The truth is, being a photographer is incredibly interesting and brings great joy and value to my life, but there is much more to this job than just clicking the shutter. Want to know what really happens behind the scenes, then keep reading!

EDITING

Duh- this one is pretty obvious. Okay, maybe it’s not obvious—I have no idea what non-photogs think of being a photographer. I strive to get my images as perfect as possible in camera, but the truth is that when you are working with little munchkins there isn’t always time for me to change my camera settings. Other times I have the perfect picture in camera but someone has a boogie coming out of their nose. I don’t want to miss a perfect shot because a kid needs their nose wiped for the 1,000^th time, as it is simply easier to make that boogie go bye-bye in post processing.

I use a Bamboo Wacom tablet for editing. It’s like using a digital pencil instead of a mouse. This helps a ton with my wrist pain and now I can’t really remember how to edit without it.

EMAILS/ADMIN WORK

This takes up SO MUCH TIME!! You would think the majority of my time is spent actually taking photographs, but in reality I devote an hour and a half each day to various administrative tasks like answering emails, creating blog posts, sending invoices, etc. Boring stuff.

PINTEREST

Why yes, I get to Pinterest as part of my job! It’s my job to take amazing photographs of my clients, but in order to do that I want my clients to be looking their best. Thus, I like to keep a current Pinterest account with “What to Wear” inspiration for all my clients. I also like to pin ideas for cake smashes and newborn sessions.

LOCATION SCOUTING

One of the most excruciating parts of the job. You might think driving around and checking out new locations is super fun times, but truthfully it is something I don’t especially enjoy. I always bring my model in residence to check out locations so that I can take his photo as an example to show future clients a particular local. My three year old model isn’t always so cooperative during the session, thus my opinion on this activity. When location scouting goes well though, it’s awesome and I love it. So I have a love/hate relationship with location scouting because I hate doing it but I LOVE when I spy a new locale.

IMAGE REVEALS

This is the fun part where I visit my clients after their session so they can view their full gallery of images for the first time! I get to do a show and tell of the different prints and products I offer and help families decide how they want to use their images in their own homes. I get giddy when families make their final selections because I love seeing my work printed and I love knowing their pictures aren’t going to die a digital death. I really love doing newborn session image reveals because I get to see the little munchkins again and usually they are already noticeably larger and more alert than during the newborn session. It is so cool to see how quickly and dramatically those newborn blobbies turn into babies.

MUSIC AND SNACKAGE

Picking out tunes on Spotify is a necessary and vital part of getting my proper editing groove on. My favorite playlist—“Now That’s What I Call Music” compilation. All the pop songs I grew up with in the 90s and early 2000s. Equally important to the tunes is my snackage. My favorite is Indulgent Trail mix (the one that’s basically 90% chocolate pieces and the remaining 10% is divided between raisins and nuts).

Roanoke Child Photographer l Carrollton Location Scouting

Y’all….I am so pleased with these images. A few weeks ago my family loaded in the truck for a massive Saturday afternoon excursion on the other side of DFW. We had to pick up some Craigslist find for my husband, make a trip to the IKEA during its ‘people zoo’ peak of the weekend, and finish it off with some location scouting for my fall mini sessions. It was exhausting, but so worth it.

I love taking pictures of my own munchkin, but at age three he is kind of over the mom with a camera thing. A lot of what I’ve gotten recently at home is very candid shots which I accomplish by sneaking out the camera when he’s super involved in his playtime. I love capturing those every day moments, but sometimes I just want to dress him up and get some cutesy smile photos. Trophy Club Child Photographer | H. Anyway, I came armed with marshmallows for bribery but honestly I barely used them. Holden was totally being a ham that afternoon. I had my husband as a helper and he had the genius idea to make Holden’s stuffed animal make tooting noises. What is it with boys and farts?! Without the aid of the stuffed animal with flatulence I likely would have ended up mostly with photos like this:

This was a new location for me in Carrollton. I don’t often shoot on the Dallas county/Collin county side of the Dallas Ft. Worth Metroplex, so I am always searching for new locations in that area. I love the rustic look of this turn of the century homestead. They had a great surrounding property too with mature trees that (fingers crossed) will turn colors during the fall. I can see this place becoming a staple for me year-round, but I am especially excited to bring my October fall mini clients here.

Ft. Worth Newborn Photographer l Baby Charlie

August 19, 2015

Little Baby Charlie visited my studio yesterday morning. He was the cutest little peanut, even if he did pee on me an awful lot. I guess I can’t complain because at least things weren’t coming out the other end and that’s always a major plus in my line of work. Baby C was really sleepy, but he would pop his eyes open and become bright and alert every time I moved him between poses. He was a great back sleeper though and I love how he looks like such a cuddle bug in the photos taken in that pose. The little guy also decided to stay awake for family photos, which is cool because we got a chance to see his eyes. I love how he’s making eye contact with Mom in this family photo:

I was eager to meet this family because I learned through our emails that Dad was a pilot. If you follow me at all you know that I am married to a corporate pilot, and so I always enjoy meeting families who live the aviation lifestyle. Roanoke Newborn Photographer l Consumer Lab Comparison

Want to know my biggest pet peeve about being in the professional photography business? It’s when people don’t print their photos!! I’m know I’ve been super vocal about that on this blog over the past year, but I honestly can not understand why anyone would invest in custom, fine art, professional photography and then never bother displaying their images.

Of course I do offer the digital files and many of my clients choose to go that route. To be honest, sometimes I cringe when handing over digital images because I fear that those precious images that the family invested so much time, effort and money into making happen are just going to sit on a flash drive or computer and eventually will be lost to the digital abyss.

I know the main reason clients order digitals is so they can print their own images and save money, and I get it–I mean, I am all for saving moo-lah. In fact, I even visit two grocery stores every Wednesday (that’s the day that grocery stores publish their ads) and do the whole price-matching pain in the caboose thing at Wal-Mart and Aldi. Side note: if you pay over 99 cents a pound for apples you might be crazy.

Here’s the thing, I really want to give my clients the best education in what you are paying for because ALL PHOTO LABS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL!!! Even professional labs have a ton of variation, and I’ve spent the money printing samples with different pro labs so I could choose the one I felt best reflects my photography work. [Read more…]
