DFW BABY PHOTOGRAPHER | WEEK 25

This DFW baby photographer has spent another week in the summer trenches. We are still plugging along, doing a lot of swimming. The days are SO LONG though, particularly when my husband travels most of the time and it’s too hot to do anything outdoors that isn’t water related. We have been doing a lot though, a little outing each day. Often, it’s just to the grocery store, library, gym or maybe an indoor playground. My baby is still transitioning between 1 and 2 naps a day, so he’s on like a 1.5 naps/day schedule and it’s kind of killing our ability to get anything done during the daytime. I’m looking forward to that transition being over with!! Anyone have words of wisdom for making the switch to one nap, hit me up.

And, the push along CAT truck makes yet another appearance in my Project 365. I worried about the 5.5 year age gap being too big for them to play together, but so far it’s not an issue. Judd loves pushing his brother around on this toy, and Holden loves getting a free ride from his brother. Win win.

As a boy mom who grew up in an all-girl household, I end up doing a lot of things that I never imagined. For example, archery, rock climbing, golf, camping etc. Just a lot of things I wasn’t exposed to and now have the opportunity to explore through my sons. H had a Boy Scout event over the weekend that involved indoor rock climbing. We both tried it, and it was so fun. I would love to go back with just my husband and make it a date night. Dinner and a movie has its place, but I love doing active things too. Maybe God knew what he was doing when he made me a boy mom?

Swimmy swimmy. Used my little Olympus for some underwater shots. It’s harder than it looks, and I’m not a great underwater photo editor, so salvaging one photo out of like 100 is pretty darn good for me.

As a Fort Worth baby photographer, I obviously can’t resist taking a million photos of my own little newborn. Although, he turned 3 moths today, so I’m not sure he classifies as a newborn anymore.

Love that he is so vocal and coos all the time! He is definitely more animated now, and we are having specific periods of awake and asleep time. I am looking forward to seeing all of his monthly milestone photos together at the end of his first year!

Trophy Club Family Photographer l Bluebonnet Session What to Wear Tips

One of the most common questions I get around this time of year is how to dress for bluebonnet and spring time photos. Now that it’s finally 75 degrees and sunny in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, I think it’s a good time to start answering that question! Here are my top three tips and tricks:
1. FOLLOW THE WHAT TO WEAR COMMANDMENTS:
My top three “What to Wear” commandments apply for spring and bluebonnet sessions just as much as any other time of year: coordinate and complement; accessorize; and add layers and texture:

Now, my personal favorite for spring sessions has to be a timeless, classic look. I’m thinking neutrals and pastels—browns, creams, grays, like pinks or mint. If you want a more casual look, go with jeans. If you want to dress it up, go with dresses/skirts for the women and khakis, linen pants or gray toned pants for the men.

The all-white look is also very traditional with bluebonnets, but I have to say that while I wouldn’t totally rule out the solid white thing I do think it can run a bit flat. If you love that white look, one idea is to take it up a notch—think a girl’s white top with pretty yellow flowers (like this one below):

Another fantastic look for bluebonnets in particular is BRIGHT COLORS! I’m not as partial to neon because it can leave a color cast on faces, but solid brights provide gorgeous contrast. My absolute favorite color to coordinate with bluebonnets is yellow.

2. ONLINE SHOPPING SPREE
Outfitting an entire family for a photo session can get super pricey, so the items I’ve highlighted in my visuals and on my Pinterest page are at all different price points. The truth is, you don’t have to break the bank to find coordinating outfits, but it will require time and planning. I usually go full-in on outfits for our fall family photos and that once a year event can leave even me pulling my hair out. It’s definitely not easy, but the nice thing is that you can online shop from thousands of different stores and avoid some of the hassle of dragging the kids into a thousand dressing rooms. In our house I usually do the online shopping for the boys and then find my own outfit in store so I can try it on. I feel like guy clothes are a bit more forgiving than women’s outfits, so that’s how I roll…hehe. Here are the stores on my online shopping hit list:

3. FIND A SHOPPING CONSULTANT

If getting dressed up isn’t your thing, or you feel overwhelmed by the process then find someone to help. I encourage my clients to text or email me photos of their outfit options and I’m happy to weigh in. Many stores even have wardrobe clothing consultants (Ann Taylor, Anthropologie) that can help you pull a look together in a snap. You are investing money into these photos and it makes no sense to skimp on looking your best for something that is going to last a lifetime.

Meet Miss L! She was a few days early and just the cutest little peanut of a baby. I traveled out there earlier this week for a family lifestyle session featuring Baby L.

A family lifestyle newborn session is much more candid than an in-studio posed newborn shoot. I basically follow the family around as they do normal things with baby–snuggling, feeding, cuddling, etc. This family had some lovely spaces to work in, including a gorgeous nursery.

Baby L is one of my “Baby Steps” littles, so I was thrilled to see him for his first session since he was a newborn. He has certainly changed a lot! I usually meet my “Baby Steps” kiddos around 6 months, but circumstances prevented Mr. L and I from getting together so here is is all big boy, sitting up at nearly 8 months.

We did a little combo session this time around which included some holiday pictures. I love his little Christmas sweater, he just looked so dapper.

Trophy Club Child Photographer |Simply Sparkle Preview

I am so excited to share previews from the Simply Sparkle sessions last weekend. It was a busy day, yet my amazing clients made it feel like a piece of cake. You guys (or rather your kiddos) rocked these sessions. I also enjoyed getting to meet many new faces during this set of mini’s.

It was ridiculously cold outside for these Simply Sparkle mini’s–in fact, I believe it actually ended up snowing the next day which is super odd for a November in Dallas/Fort Worth. So glad that this year I had the Christmas mini setup in my residential studio in Roanoke. I’m pretty sure there wouldn’t have been the same level of smiles if we’d been powering through the frosty air.

I also loved the simplicity of this setup–it really did end up showing off the kids and their best features (their happy holiday faces). Enjoy the sneak peek:

Trophy Club Family Photographer |Grapevine Fall Mini Session Preview

This weekend marked the last of my DFW Fall Family Mini sessions for the 2014 season. Photographs were taken at the Grapevine Botanical Gardens. This place is really lovely–and I can promise you that pretty much every major photographer in DFW was there on Sunday doing mini sessions! It was a bit of a zoo, but a big thanks for all my awesome clients for sticking in there and going with the flow.

While Fall Family Mini’s are now complete, I will be offering one last mini session this season. Trophy Club Baby Photographer |Miss E & Miss A Cake Smash

I first met this great family for their parents maternity session over a year ago! So, I’ve basically known them since before they were born–hehe.

It has been an immense joy to photograph these little girls as they have grown over the past year. It is really one of my absolute favorite things about this job–getting to see those teeny, tiny babies change so quickly throughout the course of a year. The growth is so dramatic when I see them every 3-4 months…and by one year old little ones are starting to develop their own personality. Taking photos of twins can be challenging–one is happy and the other isn’t; someone wants nothing to do with the camera and the other is a giant ham that day. But, these young ones have been in pretty good spirits every time we’ve met. They even survived a very country photoshoot featuring lots of insects and sticker bushes at their 9 month session. They are troopers!

We held their 1st birthday/cake smash session at my in-home studio in Roanoke, TX. Mom brought some great looking cakes, they were so pretty it was almost a shame to have them smashed! The girls were into the cake, especially the frosting part. Mom brought inspiration for this setup, so big props to their amazing mama for setting up such a special cake smash.

I was so glad to reconnect with this family, their little girl was one of the very first newborns I ever worked with. I know I have grown so much as a photographer since then, and I am forever thankful to families like theirs who let me practice in the very beginning. Their little one isn’t so little anymore–she’s such a big girl and full of energy.

We took their latest round of family photos at the Grapevine Botanical Gardens .I love this location because it has ample shade and it is small enough to travel the majority of the location on foot, yet large enough to give several different options for photos.
