Miss S turned ONE this week! Can’t believe is that already 12 months ago that I did her newborn photos. That girl gave us a run for the money during her newborn session, but I will say that for both her 6 month and 1st year photos she was such a smiley little angel.

We ventured to the Dallas Arboretum for Miss S’s session, which was also a combo family session featuring her parents and grandparents. I love the Dallas Arboretum because it’s got such great shade at almost anytime of day–a huge plus for mid-August, but also a necessity when doing photos in midday. There is also an abundance of ivy, stonewalls, steps, benches, staircases, fountains—really a huge variety of setting and no way you could cover it all during a single hour.

Trophy Club Baby Photographer |Miss E & Miss A, 9 Months

This is the third time I’ve photographed Miss E & Miss A, and they are just as gorgeous as ever! I mean, sincerely…these little girls have some of the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen.

We went out to the Bob Jones Nature Center in Southlake for their 9 month photo shoot. It was a lovely morning, and Miss A was offering plenty of smiles and giggles but her sister really wanted nothing to do with me. With such beautiful eyes though I’m pretty sure Miss E could have given me the stink eye the whole time and still had great images. Either way, she may not have given me a big gummy smile, but I think it’s really precious when you can capture babies with that sense of wonderment/confusion/seriousness.

I also want to offer major props to mom and dad who didn’t have a meltdown over the sticker bushes and ant issues at the preserve. I’ve photographed at this location many a time and I will say this year has been the worst for prickly bushes and ants. The girls seemed to be unphased–in fact, Miss A kind of wanted to gobble some of the ants, but of course we didn’t let her follow through on that.

Trophy Club Baby Photographer |Miss L First Birthday

Miss L wins the award for pictures taken on the hottest day of the year (so far!). We were all a sweaty mess by the end of these photos, but who can care when you are working with someone so adorable?

Miss L was a bit unsure of me and the whole experience of being outside for her photos, so she didn’t give a ton of toothy smiles, but she did offer some GREAT expressions. Her eyes are just beautiful and show a lot of personality.

I think the best part was her cake smash. Miss L just dove right in and showed absolutely no hesitation. She was a big fan of the icing (aren’t we all?). Her mom even made the tutu and the rosette smash cake–that’s some talent, and I’m uber jealous.

I can’t resist sharing some photos from our recent family vacation to Orange Beach. We had a lovely time traveling with our good friends and their little boy, who is 1 1/2.

This was also a great chance for me to try out my latest lens acquisition–a Sigma 8-15mm f/2 fisheye! I took both my pro camera and my backup Rebel, but I ended up shooting almost exclusively on my Rebel just because I would hate to get sand in my pro equipment. So, the fisheye lens effect is significantly lessened on my Rebel/crop frame (excuse the technical jargon, but’s it’s for my photog friends out there). I know my images would have had that gorgeous fisheye effect with my usual camera, but again, in the end I just couldn’t stomach potentially damaging my top notch equipment. Anyway, here’s what a true fisheye effect looks like:

I was still pretty pleased with the results, but I really missed having my pro camera in the post-sunset hours. My Rebel just couldn’t get the job done with that low-lighting situation. Thankfully though, we had LOTS of sunshine during our trip to the beach and I was even able to get the settings together for my husband to take some photos of me and my son. That’s a tough job, because even if I get the settings right the hubs still has to get the focal point correct, and frame the scene how I want. We get in regular battles over this, but I would like to applaud him for his improvements over the past year. He’s learning 🙂

We spent the majority of our days playing at the beach, swimming in the pool and hanging out at the condo splash park. Holden really loved having the waves crash at his feet, and he loved making “sand soup”–a mixture of water, sand and seashells. We had a few activities outside the ocean, including a Nature Center, the Gulf Shores pier, lots of restaurants, a BIG splash park, bumper boats, go-karts and the zoo.

I met up with Miss M this morning for her 9 month photos. It was perfect timing to do them on the 4th of July given that Mom had recently purchased the most adorable little dress. We found a shady spot under some trees and Miss M did her magic with those baby smiles. I love that this time around she’s sporting a bit more hair and it’s coming in red–what a firecracker!

Love this little family who I’ve been photographing over the past year since their daughter was a newborn. They were such troopers meeting up pretty early on a Sunday morning in Deep Ellum for some family photos. I try to keep family photos fun–nothing too posed or serious, but the truth is that as a Mom myself I know that getting everyone dressed in coordinating outfits and showing up in the AM is no small feat. But, it is so worth it in the end to have documentation of your family and how things change over time– I’m so glad that the Curtin family braved family photos with a 3 and 1 year old.

The location, Deep Ellum, is one of my favorites! I love the extra texture, color and vibrancy of the place. We did have to do quite a bit of walking, so by the time this session was over I think we were all quite sweaty, but I believe the photos speak for themselves.

Trophy Club Baby Photographer |Baby W 8 Months

Baby W is on the second part of his Baby Steps plan, so it’s been about 3 months since I’ve seen him. They grow up so quickly–especially when I see these little babies every few months during the first year of life and it’s just like warp speed how much they change in such a short span of time. Can’t wait to meet up with him again in a few months for his 1st birthday photos!

For this session, Mom and Dad met me at Lake Grapevine on an early Saturday morning. It was nice and quiet and we were pretty much the only ones around, so super peaceful atmosphere. I can’t remember the last time I’ve been to that lake and had it be so quiet and tranquil. Baby W had a cute little beach towel, sandals, his pail and shovel and beachwear for his photos. Love the creativity and a great way to document his first summer. Mom even put a little sunscreen on Baby W’s nose for our final set of photos, and I think that image speaks for itself.

Trophy Club Baby Photographer |Miss K 10 Months

Miss K is one of my “Baby Steps” kiddos–meaning I did her newborn photos, as well as her 6 and now 9 month photos. It is an absolute joy watching my “Baby Steps” little ones go through that first year–they change so dramatically just in the few months between our meetings. In fact, Miss K is already standing solo really well at 10 months, and I have a sneaking suspicion that she’s going to be an early walker! Get ready Mom and Dad…

One thing I adore about this little girl is her hair. When she visited my studio around 6 months she basically had a full head of gorgeous brown hair. Now at 10 months she was easily able to wear pigtails and have actual bows in her hair. That’s quite an accomplishment for a little one. In fact, my son is 2 and a half and he probably has half the hair of Miss K! I’m sure her momma is getting compliments all the time.

I first fell in love with photography over lifestyle images. I absolutely adore the every day, normal things that really add up to make all of our lives unique and yet so similar. My husband is a big iphone photo-taker, but that just isn’t really my style. I mean, don’t get me wrong–I do take photos on my phone on a near daily basis. But the quality is just so horrible that I can’t justify actually having any of those printed professionally. Sure, they’re great for showing on the computer or Facebook, but it’s important I think to have images of my son that are worthy of a photo album and yet still represent our “everyday” life. I know my parents have several of those albums–the pages filled with the obligatory “stand here and smile” in your 50s girl Halloween costume. But then there are plenty of photos of me and my sisters just hanging around the house, taken with a point and shoot camera that are actually of some quality. Those are the images I look back on and see my whole life through. That’s why I try and use my big-people camera at least 1-2x a month to capture everyday parts of our family life.

This month I grabbed the camera on a gloomy Saturday morning to document the fact that my son currently has an obsession with peaches. Every meal he requests peaches. Every snack he requests peaches. I’m pretty sure this is just a phase–like when all he wanted to eat was cauliflower. But still, it will be so nice to look back on our memories and be able to see that first, juicy bite and the thrill in the little dude’s eyes over something so simple as a summer peach.

Happy 1st Birthday to Miss R! She started her session off pretty happy, but as our tour through the Dallas Arboretum continued it became clear that Miss R was about ready to be done with me and my camera. Thankfully her Mommy and Grandma were there to help elicit some beautiful grins and smiles! You have to love the extremes shown here–just a perfect documentation of what it’s like to be 1.
